Day 19 - 2 Lake Nasser

Well, we made it. Visas did not arrive until well after noon (many many grateful thanks to Ross for all his continuous efforts), but "fortunately" the ticket office had been forced to close (so could not sell on our reserved tickets) as there was a riot (we think Egyptians v Sudanese).

All we could hear as we tried to hide behind our foam sleeping mats was the sound of constant gunfire, until we realised that the noise was in fact that of all the rock missiles that were raining down on the flimsy metal roof under which we were sheltering. Then everyone seemed to find metal bars and wooden staves, as different groups "marched" threateningly back and forth in front of us. Shannan took photographs, but the rest of decided that discretion was the better part of valour. We all lived to tell the tale, totally unharmed but an interesting experience. NB. This is not be exaggerating - words written with Ian's assistance.

PS. In posting from Luxor, I forgot to say that we had an excellent meal in "gun shot alley" - what an interesting life I lead.

Having arrived at the port at 09.30, we eventually got on board at 15.20, and finally left Aswan at 18.30. We all decided not to use our cabins, and to sleep on deck. Typing this now literally by the light of the silvery moon, as we sail down toward the Sudan although goodness knows when it will get published.
