Day 38- Aksum/Axum 10/11/12

A really good night's sleep! Another long, slow drive over unmade roads as we made our way up and down, up and down as we slowly climbed our way back up to some 6000'. One major obstacle was the valley of the Tekaze (?) tributary of the Blue Nile - further upstream the Chinese are building a huge dam for both irrigation and hydropower purposes. We passed through a village called May Tsemre (?) which seemed to be largely a refugee camp.

The scenery again was just beautiful, with large raptors of some kind wheeling high overhead. Lunch was taken in an unnamed (to us) village - the Friends Cafe where we were so unusual a visit that locals took photos of us as we ate. Meal tasted fine, but goodness knows what was in it. We passed by the gleaming white hotel where we should have spent last night (and published blog). Damn!
Then, at last, we made Aksum (Axum).
