Day 138- Drakensberg 18/2/13

A free morning in Durban but there does not seem to be much to see (except perhaps for the largest aquarium in Africa?) so had a walk along the long sandy beach, and warm waters of the Indian ocean, to see the Moses Mabhida stadium (built for the 2010 soccer World Cup) which is almost right on the beach. You approach it through a very smart tiled tunnel and then through an avenue of palm trees.

Had my own personal guided tour as no one else rolled up, and must say the stadium is really impressive, both inside and out. Out onto the pitch, up into the stands and down into the players' changing rooms, showers etc. I must book a tour of the new Wembley to see how the compare. Both stadia have a central arch to hold up the roof, the one here being in the shape of a "flat Y" similar to that of the post apartheid national flag,
symbolising a divided nation becoming one. There is a "sky car" which takes you to the top of the arch - or you can climb the 500 steps!

My shuttle was due to collect me from a local McDonalds at 14.30 but had still not arrived by 15.00. Just as I was beginning to think about any possible alternative action, it arrived - saved! Up the N3 freeway and then across country with the scenery becoming ever more impressive as we approached the mountains.

Am staying at Sani Lodge at the foot of the Sani Pass, which leads up to Lesotho. SL has been built up over the last 20 years or do by a couple who are obviously very eco minded. Our water comes from a local spring (and one of the showers is open to the world, with view of course - very invigorating). We have fresh milk from our own herd of Jersey cows, own butter "made in our unique water powered churn", home made yoghurt, ice creams, jams and bread etc etc. I have to say it is a rather nice place to spend my last few days before it is back to Cape Town - and home!
